From Corporate Life to Midlife Coaching
Claire and James both started in corporate roles before transitioning to health and wellness coaching. For James, a fascination with psychology and human behaviour ultimately led him to open a retreat business in Ibiza in 2012. The retreat business became a springboard for helping Midlifers address issues such as weight gain, low libido, and diminished energy. Claire’s journey, on the other hand, was deeply personal. After facing stress, imposter syndrome, and health challenges following her divorce, she turned to fitness, nutrition, and self-development. Together, they’ve created a holistic coaching approach, blending mindset, movement, and nutrition.
Key Midlife Challenges—and How to Overcome Them
Claire and James highlighted several key challenges Midlifers face, along with actionable solutions:
1. The Mindset Shift
By midlife, many people play life “not to lose” instead of “to win,” becoming more risk-averse and stuck in old habits. This shift, compounded by hormonal changes, can lead to anxiety, low confidence, and even depression. James emphasised the importance of small, consistent changes…what he calls “micro-adjustments”…to build momentum. For example, incorporating a daily gratitude practice can reframe a negative outlook and foster optimism, which has been shown to improve life outcomes.
2. Movement as Medicine
One of the biggest myths about midlife fitness is the belief that cardio is the best way to lose weight. Instead, resistance training is key for maintaining muscle mass, which naturally declines with age. Claire stressed that resistance training boosts metabolic rate, improves body composition, and supports hormonal health. She recommends starting with bodyweight exercises like squats, press-ups, and tricep dips, before progressing to weights or bands. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is also effective, offering a quick yet impactful workout option.
3. The Role of Hormones
Hormonal changes are a common denominator in midlife challenges. For women, menopause often brings fluctuating moods, weight gain, and sleep disturbances. For men, andropause—a gradual decline in testosterone—can lead to reduced muscle mass, libido, and energy levels. James noted that lifestyle adjustments such as resistance training, a whole-food diet, and adequate sleep can help support hormonal balance for both genders. Additionally, he encouraged open conversations about menopause and andropause to foster understanding within relationships.
The Midlife Home: Optimising Your Environment
Claire and James also touched on the impact of home environments on midlife wellbeing. Claire noted that many clients struggle with blurred boundaries between work and living spaces, exacerbated by hybrid working. To create a healthier home environment, they recommend:
Separating Work and Living Areas: Dedicate specific spaces for work to mentally “clock out” at the end of the day.
Reducing Digital Overload: Limit phone use, especially before bed, to improve sleep quality. Consider turning off Wi-Fi at night and leaving phones outside the bedroom.
Decluttering: A tidy space promotes mental clarity and reduces feelings of overwhelm, which are common during midlife transitions.
The Power of Coaching: A Catalyst for Transformation
Claire and James emphasised that seeking professional guidance can make a significant difference. Whether it’s addressing fitness, mindset, or relationships, coaching provides accountability and tailored strategies. James pointed to Novak Djokovic’s continual investment in coaches as an example of how even the best can benefit from expert support.
Final Takeaway
Midlife is not the end; it’s an opportunity for transformation. By making small, intentional changes and seeking support where needed, Midlifers can not only survive but thrive in this stage of life. From gratitude practices to resistance training, and from decluttering the home to setting boundaries with technology, the strategies shared by Claire and James Davis offer a practical roadmap for rediscovering vitality and joy.
