Is My WiFi Safe? How far should I be from my WiFi router?

When it comes to protecting yourself from the adverse effects of radiation from Wifi and other home electrical devices, all experts agree that “distance is your friend”…The furthest away you are from your wifi router, the healthier you will be.

Ideally your WIFi router should be at least 15/ 20 feet away from the nearest bedroom. This is the most important place in the house to protect as its where you spend the most amount of time and where you come to rest and regenerate. This distance needs to be doubled to 30 to 40 ft from children’s rooms as they are more vulnerable (look out for our blog in the next few weeks on ‘Why children are more affected by EMFs and how to protect them’).

One way to measure your exposure effectively and analyze the best place to put your router is by using an EMF meter. The safe levels are below 60 microwatts per cm2… if you don’t want to measure this yourself, get a consultant to do it for you. They’ll advise you on the best place to put your router in your home, and identify any other potential electro-smog issues that could be detrimental to your health and well-being.

Of course, if you live in a small flat and/or in a city like a lot of us do, not only will it be difficult to put this kind of distance between yourself and the WiFi router but you will most likely have a ton of other WiFi signals coming in from your lovely neighbours. If 15f/20t away would put you in your neighbors living room or if the list of WiFi networks available in your building goes on forever- here are 5 tips to help reduce your exposure:

1. PLUG IN

Aside From Distance, The Next Best Way To Minimize EMF Radiation Issues Is To Connect Your Ethernet Cable Between Your Laptop Or Computer Network.

This is what we used to do in the good old days and (like most things these days!), the old ways are often the best when it comes to our health.

Plugging in also generally makes the connection better but it is not always practical to install (especially if you are a techno dunce like me).

2. SWITCH OFF

Turn Off The WiFi Router When You Are Not Using It, Especially At Night.

If you don’t think you will remember to do this every night, we use a simple and cheap device called a plug-in time controller, that automatically switches the router off so that I don’t have to remember. This will do wonders for your sleep, simply by making your bedroom a WIFi free zone!

But, go one step further- In our last blog post How To Detox Your Home In 3 Simple Steps, we mentioned that all technology should be banned from the bedroom but the ideal would be to cut all electrical current to your bedroom by switching off the circuit breaker in that room (or turning off all the plugs at the wall as often as possible). 3. GET A WIFI ROUTER GUARD OR SHIELD

The WiFi Router Guard Uses The Faraday Concept To Reduce The Radiation Emitted From Your Router By Up To 95%.

Essentially the metal mesh of the cage is smaller than the shortest wavelength of electromagnetic radiation, preventing it from escaping. It does not inhibit your ability to use WiFi but does drop the range by around 25%, although it’s important to remember that most household routers are much more powerful than needed. I think this is an essential piece of kit even if you are switching off at night and cabling your internet.

4. USE WIFI BLOCKING PAINT

Turn Off The WiFi Router When You Are Not Using It, Especially At Night.

If you have WiFi networks coming at you from all angles, then using WiFi blocking paint will give you the best protection possible. Although it is pretty expensive, you only really need to paint your bedroom as it’s where you need the most restorative space to be. 5. PURCHASE SOME WIFI BLOCKING TEXTILES

Using WiFi Blocking Textiles Which Are Woven With Metals That Rebound The Radiation From WiFi Could Be A Good Solution.

Not as expensive as painting your bedroom with WiFi blocking paint but also not quite as protective. If you have a four poster bed this option can work really well as it can look really pretty too. Reducing exposure to WiFi radiation doesn’t need to be expensive but the health benefits are invaluable. When you have large sources of radiation around, you like a WiFi router on in the home or a mobile phone near your bed, melatonin production is inhibited in the body and your sleep will be disrupted. And when we don’t get good quality sleep, our bodies don’t have all the tools they need to fight disease, cleanse toxins, repair cellular damage and so much more!
