We like to think our bodies are resilient. And they are. But they were not designed to cope with a world full of synthetic chemicals, microplastics drifting through the air, and “convenience” products that quietly sabotage our biology.
In this episode of The Healthy Home Show, I sat down with Eddie Stone , CEO and founder of TOUCHSTONE ESSENTIALS , to talk detox in a way that feels grounded, practical and relevant to real life. Not the green-juice-for-three-days kind of detox. The kind that acknowledges we are living in toxic times and we need strategies that actually work.
Because detox is not just about what you do to your body. It’s also about what your home is doing to you.
Below is a written summary of the key takeaways from our conversation. if you wnat to listen to the full podcast please click on the links below:

1) Your body is brilliant, but it’s overloaded
Eddie has spent over 30 years in the detox space, and his journey began in a very personal way. His mother became extremely unwell with what appeared to be an autoimmune crisis. After seeing doctor after doctor with no real answers, detoxification became the thing that finally shifted her health.
The big message here is simple.
If you are not thinking about toxicity and exposure, you are missing a massive piece of the health puzzle.
Yes, the body has detox systems: liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph, gut. But those systems were not built for the level of chemical exposure we now live with. Over time, toxins can accumulate and create what is often called “body burden”, and once the body is overloaded, symptoms can start to show up in all sorts of ways.
2) If you can smell it, take it seriously
This was one of the most practical rules of thumb from the episode.
If you can smell it, it’s a particle, and your body is having to process it.
Think VOCs from paint, cleaning products, synthetic fragrance, air “fresheners”, scented candles, treated furniture, new carpets, even some building materials.
I’ve experienced this personally. I became ill after working in a toxic environment where harsh paints and chemicals were being used on-site. It triggered autoimmune symptoms and sent me down the long, exhausting route many of you will recognise: being passed from one professional to another, offered band-aids instead of answers, and having to do your own research when you barely have the energy to function.
This is why indoor air quality is not a “nice to have”. It’s foundational.
3) Heavy metals stick around for a long time
We talked about heavy metals like lead, mercury and cadmium, and one point really landed.
These toxins can linger in the body for years. Decades, even.
Eddie shared that DDT, banned in the 1970s, has been found in 99.9% of newborns’ cord blood in modern testing. That’s not to scare you. It’s to bring home the reality that some chemicals have extremely long half-lives and they do not just disappear because a law changed.
This is why reducing exposure matters, but also why supporting detox pathways matters too. The goal is not perfection. The goal is lowering the load.
4) Microplastics are not a side issue, they are a body issue
Plastics are everywhere and this is one of the biggest “how did we get here?” topics of modern living.
Microplastics are not only coming from water bottles and packaging. They are also coming from our clothes.
Every time synthetic clothing goes through the washer and dryer, it sheds microplastics into the air. Add synthetic carpets, upholstery, furniture treatments and non-stick cookware into the mix and it is no wonder we are seeing plastics show up in human tissue.
Eddie mentioned estimates suggesting 5 to 7 grams of plastic in the body by later life, including in the brain. Many of you will have heard the “credit card a week” comparison.
The most surprising and practical strategy discussed was fibre.
Not glamorous, but powerful.
A typical Western diet can mean a transit time of 48+ hours. Many experts suggest under 24 hours is healthier. The more fibre you eat, the more efficiently the body can move waste through the system, reducing the chance of toxins being reabsorbed.
In plain English, you want things moving. Regularly.
5) Detox should support your life, not hijack it
We also talked about saunas, which I personally love. Eddie is a fan too, with a couple of smart cautions.
Some saunas can emit EMFs during heating. Some cheap saunas may use treated wood that can release VOCs when heated.
So yes, sauna can be brilliant, but do a little homework so you are not walking into a detox box that is quietly re-toxing you.
Eddie also made a great point about lungs. Your lungs are a filtration system you cannot replace, and exercise supports detox partly because it increases lung capacity and helps the body process what it is exposed to.
Detox is not punishment. It’s support.
Hydration, fibre, movement, clean air, clean water, less chemical exposure. These are not extreme. They are sensible.
Final Thoughts
This episode was a reminder of something I come back to again and again.
You cannot out-supplement a toxic environment.
Detox is not just a personal wellness trend. It’s a response to the reality of modern living. Our homes and habits either lower our toxic load or add to it, quietly, every day.
Longevity is not only about living longer. It’s about living better. With more energy, clearer thinking, better sleep, stronger immunity, and fewer inflammatory triggers.
And that starts where you spend most of your life. At home.
If you want your body to do what it was designed to do, heal, regulate and thrive, then we have to create environments that allow that to happen.
Health begins at home, and it radiates out into everything else
