I must confess……this newsletter has been on a slightly longer pause than planned.
The past few months have been a whirlwind of speaking engagements and, more recently, a few truly life-changing retreats at the beautiful Broughton Sanctuary in Yorkshire with the legendary Zach Bush, MD . Since then, I’ve felt like I’ve been operating on an entirely different timeline. A slower, more reflective one …so it’s taken me a little while to find my rhythm again.
But a lot has been happening behind the scenes. Season 3 of The Healthy Home Podcast is now live (you’ll find details on the latest episodes below), and I’ve been developing new sponsorship packages following some exciting enquiries from brands wanting to collaborate.
I’m also deep in development on my new course, “The Bluezone Your Home Blueprint.”
Bluezone Living: Creating Homes for Longevity
The idea grew from a simple realisation: the same principles that help people in the world’s Blue Zones live long, vibrant lives can also be applied to the way we design and inhabit our homes.
We often study how Blue Zone residents live : what they eat, how they move, their sense of purpose, their community ties …..but what about where they live?
Their homes are likely an extension of their natural surroundings: clean, airy, filled with natural light, and free from the toxins and noise that so often invade modern life. Their spaces seem to encourage calm, movement, and connection, which are qualities we can all cultivate in our own environments.
One lesson from my Blue Zone research that has stayed with me most is the power of community.
We’ve lost, in many ways, the beautiful tradition of regularly sharing meals together. We don’t set an extra place at the table in case someone drops by which is a gorgeous custom carried out in some Bluezones.
I love the notion of not asking “what did you eat last night?” but instead asking “who did you eat with?”
Let’s bring more intention back to mealtimes : more conversation, laughter, and connection because these are just as nourishing as the food itself.
So this month, I invite you to reflect:
If you could transform just one part of your home to support longevity, what would it be?
Renter’s Reform Bill
This month saw the new Awaab’s Law come into force in the UK. The law was introduced following the tragic death of young Awaab Ishak in 2020, who died from a respiratory condition caused by prolonged exposure to mould in his home.
While it’s encouraging to see the dangers of mould finally being taken more seriously, as it can be extremely damaging to health, I do worry this may turn into a blame game.
Mould is a complex issue, and so are the causes behind it. Yes, there are landlords who have ignored problems for too long, but there are also many cases where the root cause lies beyond a landlord’s control, such as structural or insulation issues within a building.
Prevention is what builds healthy homes, and that starts with education. We need to talk more about how everyday habits such as poor ventilation, drying clothes indoors, or a lack of airflow create humid environments that fuel mould growth.
Legislation can raise awareness, which is important, but it can also risk shutting down constructive conversations about how to actually create healthier homes.
Encouragingly, I have seen a huge rise in really good testing companies this year so that now we can easily test our homes for mould, noise issues, light issues, thermal / energy leakages and other air quality problems. In the not to distant future I believe this will be as common practice as your annual boiler check and gas certificate. I was told by one of the mould experts I interviewed on the podcast this season that it’s already becoming popular in the U.S. to provide a certificate of “no-mould” when selling a property as a differentiator and way to encourage a buyer to feel more confident about the purchase.
Current data from the Global Wellness Institute reports that the Wellness Real Estate market (ie Homes and Buildings that prioritise wellness) will grow to around a whopping $ 1.1 Trillion by 2029. Wellness homes currently sell 10–25 % faster and at premium values and that is projected to continue to grow. They predict that “Biophilic architecture and human-centric design will become the next currency of trust and absorption”
Over the next few months on The Healthy Home Show, I’ll be joined by three experts in building forensics, indoor air quality, and property surveying to unpack what Awaab’s Law really means and how we can stop mould before it starts. Each of them approaches the issue from a completely different angle, so together we’ll be leaving no stone unturned.
If you’re ever looking for some guidance on how to test your home for mould or any other toxin… Get in Touch!

The Dirty Truth about Cleaning – Laura Harnett
We’ve talked a lot about non-toxic sprays and detergents in this Newsletter and on the Healthy Home Show Podcast; but what about the tools we use every day to clean …like sponges, cloths, brushes?
You may recognise my latest podcast guest, Laura Harnett , from Dragon’s Den, where she successfully secured investment for her eco cleaning brand, Seep . In this week’s episode, Laura reveals how everyday cleaning tools, from sponges to cloths, are an invisible source of microplastics, hidden chemicals, and unnecessary waste. The good news? With a few smart swaps, you can dramatically reduce your exposure and environmental impact without sacrificing performance.
Read on for a written summary of this week’s interview or click the link below and listen to the full episode on your chosen podcast platform.

The Problem No One Sees: Plastic Tools = Microplastics
-
The familiar green-and-yellow sponge scourer sheds millions of microplastic particles over its lifetime (the green polypropylene top and the yellow polyurethane base both fragment as you scrub). Those particles go down the sink, into waterways, and into our homes.
-
Microfibre cloths are, by definition, micro-plastics (usually polyester). They clean brilliantly and last a long time — but release microfibres when used and washed.
-
We handle these tools daily, increasing the chance of exposure and shedding into indoor air and surfaces.
Swap: Seep’s scourer uses wood pulp (cellulose) for the sponge and loofah (a plant that grows on a vine) for the abrasive . It’s durable, effective, and breaks down without microplastics.
Performance First, Eco Always
-
Seep’s approach: make tools people would choose because they work and look good — and they just happen to be better for you and the planet.
-
Longevity: Seep’s sponge scourers typically last two months+. You can refresh sponges and “sponge-cloths” in the dishwasher or washing machine to extend life.
-
End-of-life: Aim for home-compostable wherever possible; Seep provides product-by-product end-of-life guidance (e.g., compost cellulose/loofah; recycle copper scourers indefinitely via appropriate streams).
Greenwashing Is Real — Here’s How to Spot It
-
Many “eco-looking” products (brown/green packaging, “bamboo” claims) still contain plastic blends.
-
Seep vets factories, audits materials, and prefers FSC-certified sources (for bamboo, wood pulp, natural rubber).
-
Transparency matters: when early testing once found ~1.5% polyester in a cloth, Seep discontinued it and corrected course. Ethical brands own mistakes and publish improvements.
Look for:
-
Home-compostable certification for disposables
-
FSC for plant-based materials
-
Credible business standards (B Corp), and values-aligned initiatives like Buy Women Built
Rethinking “Clean”: Less Scent, Fewer Antibacterials
We’ve been trained to equate “clean” with strong perfume and constant antibacterial agents that can drive eczema, dermatitis, and unnecessary chemical exposure.
Smarter baseline:
-
Go fragrance-free where you can (Laura’s family skin improved when they did).
-
Skip fabric softener unless essential.
-
Use simple pantry staples for many jobs: lemon, bicarbonate of soda, white vinegar.
-
Reserve antibacterial products for genuine bio-mess (e.g., pet accidents), not daily everything.
Tip to follow: Nancy Birtwhistle shares practical, low-cost cleaning recipes that work.
Waste Reality Check — and Why “Compostable” Helps
-
UK household waste systems are inconsistent across local authorities. What you can recycle kerbside varies, causing confusion and contamination.
-
A large share of residual waste isn’t landfilled…. it’s incinerated. Designing tools that avoid plastic and are home-compostable helps keep material out of both landfill and the burner.
-
Want to help improve the data? Join the Great Plastic Count community effort to track what households throw away.
Health Lens: Lifestyle Still Moves the Needle
During treatment and recovery from breast cancer, Laura learned that lifestyle changes can cut recurrence risk by around 60% — not just medication alone. That means:
-
Regular movement
-
Diverse, colourful whole foods (“eat the rainbow”)
-
Targeted micronutrients (e.g., 1–2 Brazil nuts daily for selenium)
-
Better sleep (hard for many of us, but powerful)
Reducing unnecessary chemical exposure at home, including from cleaning tools, is one practical lever alongside these fundamentals.
Quick Switches You Can Make This Week
-
Bin the green-and-yellow sponge → Cellulose + loofah scourer (home-compostable end of life).
-
Retire microfibre for most jobs → Bamboo or cellulose “sponge-cloths.”
-
Refresh, don’t replace → Pop cloths/sponges in dishwasher/washing machine to extend life.
-
Go fragrance-free → Particularly for laundry; skip fabric softener.
-
Pantry power → Keep lemon, bicarb, vinegar handy for everyday cleans.
-
Check the label → Look for FSC, home-compostable, and clear end-of-life instructions.
-
Plan the end → Compost plant-based tools; recycle metals (e.g., copper scourers) appropriately.
Why This Matters for Healthy Homes & Longevity
“Planet-friendly” and “people-friendly” are the same direction. Microplastics and persistent chemicals don’t belong in our kitchens or our bodies. Choosing non-plastic tools that perform beautifully is a low-friction, high-leverage change — multiplied across every sink, every day.
Key Takeaways
-
Everyday tools shed microplastics. Traditional scourers and microfibre cloths fragment with use and washing.
-
Plant-based tools work — and break down cleanly. Cellulose, loofah, bamboo, and FSC-certified materials are robust alternatives.
-
“Clean” ≠ perfumed + antibacterial. For most daily tasks, fragrance-free products and pantry basics are healthier for skin, air, and microbiome.
-
End-of-life matters. Prioritise home-compostable and recyclable designs; follow brand-specific disposal guidance.
-
Lifestyle is powerful. Alongside low-tox choices, movement, colourful whole foods, micronutrients (e.g., selenium), and sleep materially support long-term health.

The Hidden Health Cost of Unsustainable Fashion with Louise Gookey
This week on The Healthy Home Show, I sat down with presenter and sustainability advocate Louise Gookey to dig into a topic that touches all of us: the hidden health and environmental impact of fashion and consumer choices in our homes.
It turns out that what we wear, clean with, and throw away is quietly shaping not just our planet’s future but our hormones, our wellbeing, and even our stress levels.

The Problem with Fast Fashion
-
Two-thirds of the clothes produced worldwide contain plastic in the form of polyester and other synthetics. Every wash releases microplastics into waterways, which end up back in our food and drinking water.
-
A single polyester t-shirt can take 200 years to decompose in landfill—yet it never really “disappears,” only breaking down into microplastics.
-
Only 9% of what we send for recycling is actually recycled. Much of our discarded clothing ends up shipped to poorer countries, where communities are forced to deal with our waste.
-
Fashion production is accelerating. Instead of two or four seasons a year, some brands now release new lines 12+ times a year, fuelling a throwaway culture where clothing is designed not to last.
And it isn’t just the environment paying the price. Our health is on the line too. Toxic dyes and flame retardants used in textiles are linked to eczema, asthma, allergic reactions, hormone disruption, and even cancers. Research has even found lead in baby clothes from some fast-fashion brands.
The Hidden Toxins in Everyday Products
The issue doesn’t stop at fashion:
-
Cotton farming is one of the most water-intensive industries on the planet. A single pair of jeans can require up to 10,000 litres of water to produce, often in regions already facing water scarcity.
-
Sanitary products (tampons, pads) often contain glyphosate, plastics, and polyester threads—chemicals that can disrupt hormones when used in one of the body’s most delicate areas.
-
Household cleaners and beauty products are marketed to us as needing a different bottle for every surface or skin area. In reality, most of these are unnecessary—and many contain harsh chemicals that linger in our indoor air.
Smarter Swaps That Make a Difference
Louise reminded us that the simplest actions can be the most powerful. Here are a few to start with:
-
Turn off the tap of overconsumption. Before buying, check what you already own—you might rediscover forgotten treasures at the back of the wardrobe or cupboard.
-
Buy less, buy better. Choose organic cotton, natural fabrics, or second-hand. Look for certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), Soil Association, or B Corp.
-
Repair instead of replace. Learning to sew on a button or mend a hem reduces waste and saves money.
-
Swap plastics in the kitchen. Replace cling film with beeswax wraps, plastic Tupperware with glass, and skip heating food in plastic containers.
-
Simplify your products. One non-toxic multipurpose cleaner can replace a cupboard full of bottles. In skincare, one organic oil can replace five separate creams.
-
Choose reusable period products. Moon cups and period pants may feel like an investment at first, but they save hundreds of pounds over time and drastically cut waste.
Key Takeaways
-
Clothes = plastics. Two-thirds of garments contain synthetics that shed microplastics and harm health.
-
Waste is a global injustice. Only 9% of recycling happens; much of our waste is shipped overseas.
-
Health is directly impacted. From endocrine-disrupting dyes to glyphosate in tampons, toxins are in everyday items.
-
Consumerism is the trap. We don’t need more “stuff”—we need mindful, slower choices.
-
Small swaps matter. Multipurpose cleaners, organic fabrics, and reusable products reduce toxins and save money long-term.
Closing Thought
As Louise put it so simply: “Just turn the tap off.”
Before rushing to buy the next eco-product, pause. Look around your home. Can you repair, reuse, or repurpose first? Sustainability isn’t about perfection—it’s about slowing down, consuming less, and making conscious choices that protect our health as much as our planet.

The Hidden Dangers in Modern Homes
When you think of a “dream home,” you might imagine natural light, beautiful finishes and an open-plan kitchen. But what if that dream home is quietly making you or your family sick?
In this episode of The Healthy Home Show, I sat down with Annie Scog (BBNC, Adv Dip – Building Biology, LFA, CPHD) , an expert in building biology and founder of The Healthy Home Expert in Australia.
Her story begins with her sick cat Smokey and leads us into the lesser-known world of toxic materials, EMFs, mould, and misguided building practices that are compromising our wellbeing.
The Startling Truth: Most New Builds Aren’t Healthy
Australia is in a building boom but as Annie explains, this comes at a major cost to health and quality. It turns out:
-
1 in 10 new builds in Australia will develop mould and condensation issues within 10 years (Tasmanian University).
-
1 in 4 people lack the gene needed to detox from mould exposure putting them at risk of chronic illness.
-
Dead mould spores are still toxic and are often present even after visible mould is removed.
-
New homes are built to last just 20–30 years, but issues are appearing much earlier.
From Sick Pet to Expert: Annie’s Story
Annie’s journey started when her cat Smokey developed hyperthyroidism which her holistic vet linked to flame retardants in the home.
A stopgap renovation using PVC flooring introduced phthalates and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) into her home. These odourless toxins embedded in dust and likely triggered her pet’s illness.
“I can’t prove it with medical science, but I’m convinced our home made our cat sick.”
This led Annie to retrain in building biology, gaining certifications in mould, EMFs, air quality, water safety, and healthy materials.
What We’re Still Getting Wrong in Construction
Annie’s key concern? We’re not building for climate or for humans.
-
Homes aren’t oriented properly, leading to overheating or cold spots.
-
Dark roofs absorb too much heat yet are still widely used.
-
Cross-ventilation and thermal mass are ignored in favour of fast builds.
-
Developers are rushing through cheap waterproofing, which fails quickly and encourages mould growth.
Thermal Comfort = Healthier Homes
Simple design improvements can reduce energy use and improve health:
-
Low-E glass to filter UV rays and heat
-
Lime-based paints and plasters to regulate humidity
-
White or light-coloured roofs to reflect heat
-
Correct building orientation to maximise sunlight and breezes
-
Proper insulation and airtightness (with ventilation!) to avoid thermal bridging
Mould + EMFs = A Toxic Combo?
Did you know mould grows faster in the presence of Wi-Fi radiation?
Research by Dr Magda Havas and others suggests EMFs may increase mould toxicity and growth rate. Annie warns:
-
Smart meters and inverters should never be placed on bedroom walls
-
Induction hobs and fridges emit magnetic fields which is especially concerning for pregnant women
-
Bedrooms should be low-EMF zones: no chargers, phones, or metal spring beds
If you’re considering Wi-Fi shielding paint or canopies, get a professional EMF assessment first or you could risk making things worse.
What’s Really in Your Tap Water?
Forever chemicals like PFAS are now headline news. Annie recommends:
-
Reverse osmosis systems (not Brita) at point-of-use
-
Shower filters to reduce chlorine exposure through skin
-
Avoiding plastic water bottles, which may leach microplastics and hormone-disrupting chemicals
“If clean water costs £300–£400… the real question is: what is your health worth?”
Why Geopathic Stress & Nature Still Matter
Annie also explored Geopathic stress: energy disturbances caused by underground water, fault lines or ley lines. Ancient builders used dowsing rods to avoid building homes in energetically compromised areas. Modern homeowners can still benefit from checking what’s beneath their bed.
She also champions Biophilic design:
-
Incorporate natural light and access to nature
-
Use lime plaster and natural textures
-
Choose organic, breathable textiles especially for babies and children ( we also heard about the dangers of formaldehyde in bedding in the last podacvst epiode with carly Harryman
You can listen to that episode here
Annie’s 8 Pillars of a Healthy Home
-
Clean air
-
Clean water
-
Low-tox materials
-
Low EMF exposure
-
Thermal comfort
-
Natural light
-
Biophilic connection
-
Geopathic & energetic balance
What can you do today?
-
Use HEPA vacuums and clean dust regularly
-
Avoid carpets; use washable rugs instead
-
Don’t make your bed immediately — let it air!
-
Change your mattress every 10 years
-
Choose IKEA over cheaper MDF brands….apparenlty it has some of the lowest formaldehyde levels on the market
Where We Need Government Change
Annie’s advocacy doesn’t stop at the home. She’s:
-
Launching The Transparency Movement, a non-profit to fund women in trades and demand clear labelling on materials
-
Developing a CPD-accredited course for architects and builders in Australia
-
Pushing for the adoption of international frameworks like Living Building Challenge and WELL for healthier materials
“Green building doesn’t always mean healthy building. We need both.”
Final Thoughts
Annie’s overarching concerns…
“We’ve spent so long building for speed and profit, we forgot to build for people. It’s time we change that brick by brick.”
