I must confess……this newsletter has been on a slightly longer pause than planned.

The past few months have been a whirlwind of speaking engagements and, more recently, a few truly life-changing retreats at the beautiful Broughton Sanctuary in Yorkshire with the legendary Zach Bush, MD . Since then, I’ve felt like I’ve been operating on an entirely different timeline. A slower, more reflective one …so it’s taken me a little while to find my rhythm again.

But a lot has been happening behind the scenes. Season 3 of The Healthy Home Podcast is now live (you’ll find details on the latest episodes below), and I’ve been developing new sponsorship packages following some exciting enquiries from brands wanting to collaborate.

I’m also deep in development on my new course, “The Bluezone Your Home Blueprint.”

Bluezone Living: Creating Homes for Longevity

The idea grew from a simple realisation: the same principles that help people in the world’s Blue Zones live long, vibrant lives can also be applied to the way we design and inhabit our homes.

We often study how Blue Zone residents live : what they eat, how they move, their sense of purpose, their community ties …..but what about where they live?

Their homes are likely an extension of their natural surroundings: clean, airy, filled with natural light, and free from the toxins and noise that so often invade modern life. Their spaces seem to encourage calm, movement, and connection, which are qualities we can all cultivate in our own environments.

One lesson from my Blue Zone research that has stayed with me most is the power of community.

We’ve lost, in many ways, the beautiful tradition of regularly sharing meals together. We don’t set an extra place at the table in case someone drops by which is a gorgeous custom carried out in some Bluezones.

I love the notion of not asking “what did you eat last night?” but instead asking “who did you eat with?”

Let’s bring more intention back to mealtimes : more conversation, laughter, and connection because these are just as nourishing as the food itself.

So this month, I invite you to reflect:

If you could transform just one part of your home to support longevity, what would it be?

Renter’s Reform Bill

This month saw the new Awaab’s Law come into force in the UK. The law was introduced following the tragic death of young Awaab Ishak in 2020, who died from a respiratory condition caused by prolonged exposure to mould in his home.

While it’s encouraging to see the dangers of mould finally being taken more seriously, as it can be extremely damaging to health, I do worry this may turn into a blame game.

Mould is a complex issue, and so are the causes behind it. Yes, there are landlords who have ignored problems for too long, but there are also many cases where the root cause lies beyond a landlord’s control, such as structural or insulation issues within a building.

Prevention is what builds healthy homes, and that starts with education. We need to talk more about how everyday habits such as poor ventilation, drying clothes indoors, or a lack of airflow create humid environments that fuel mould growth.

Legislation can raise awareness, which is important, but it can also risk shutting down constructive conversations about how to actually create healthier homes.

Encouragingly, I have seen a huge rise in really good testing companies this year so that now we can easily test our homes for mould, noise issues, light issues, thermal / energy leakages and other air quality problems. In the not to distant future I believe this will be as common practice as your annual boiler check and gas certificate. I was told by one of the mould experts I interviewed on the podcast this season that it’s already becoming popular in the U.S. to provide a certificate of “no-mould” when selling a property as a differentiator and way to encourage a buyer to feel more confident about the purchase.

Current data from the Global Wellness Institute reports that the Wellness Real Estate market (ie Homes and Buildings that prioritise wellness) will grow to around a whopping $ 1.1 Trillion by 2029. Wellness homes currently sell 10–25 % faster and at premium values and that is projected to continue to grow. They predict that “Biophilic architecture and human-centric design will become the next currency of trust and absorption”

Over the next few months on The Healthy Home Show, I’ll be joined by three experts in building forensics, indoor air quality, and property surveying to unpack what Awaab’s Law really means and how we can stop mould before it starts. Each of them approaches the issue from a completely different angle, so together we’ll be leaving no stone unturned.
