Technology protection in the home

As we spend a large amount of our time asleep, it is most important to make sure the bedroom is set up to provide us with the best quality of sleep to regenerate and restore our bodies effectively. I probably don’t need to reiterate how incredibly important it is that we get the best nights sleep possible for our health and happiness but it has been shown that technology can keep the body in a constant state of stress, therefore its always at the top of my list to address whenever I go to a new client’s house ( or anyone’s house for that matter).

When considering the harmful effects of technology , the most important things to think about are your exposure to Blue Light and also to EMFs.

Blue light is emitted by devices such as laptops, phones and TVs and not only causes a reduction of Melatonin in the body which affects the quality of our sleep in a big way but has also been known to cause everything from eye strain to cancer.
EMFs which are are also emitted from these technological devices have been shown to damage our cells and DNA causing a whole host of illnesses and degradation within the body.

Here are a few things I religiously do to minimize my exposure to the toxicity from electrical devices.

1 Remove all technology from your bedroom.

Don’t watch TV or work on your Laptop in your bedroom if you can possible help it and if it cant be avoided, make sure every device is either out of the room or off when you go to sleep. Its good to try and keep the bedroom as much a sanctuary as possible otherwise the body doesn’t get the message that its a place to relax and recharge. If you have been using your mobile as your alarm clock, invest in a simple budget battery operated one and leave the mobile out of the room.

2 Come off all screens a couple of hours before bedtime.

Allow your body time to get into night time relaxation without the onslaught of Blue Light. Turn down the lights, have a bath and get your body prepared for sleep. if you have to be on screens at night time get yourself some blue blocking glasses to protect your eyes. There are various companies that do these like Truedark but the ones I use are by Teddith.

3 Turn off your Wifi at night.

If you are able to, its even better to cut all power to bedrooms at night so that the body can properly rest without any interference form electrical currents . Obviously, depending on where you live, it may be a bit difficult to control Wifi coming into the home from adjoining properties. If you cant persuade your neighbours of the benefits to their health of turning off Wifi at night, don’t worry, there are other interior tricks you can use to protect yourself from these rays including certain paints and fabrics which we cover in more depth in a separate blog in the near future.

4 Activate night-shift or night-mode on your phone.

This will minimize the amount of blue light that is being emitted from your phone. It changes the display to a much warmer red color which is much better for the eyes. This is essential if you cant help yourself scrolling through Instagram at night! I actually keep my Night Mode on throughout the day but its super important that you do this at night at least to protect your eyes and your sleep quality. There are also Apps like IRIS that can be downloaded for your laptop or PC which allow you to control the amount of blue light from your device.

5 Always create distance and ‘plug in’.

All the experts in the field of Technology protection say ‘distance is your friend’ and that when you can, it’s best to be ‘wired in‘ meaning the further away you are from the device the better and a wired connection should always be used where possible. i.e hold the phone away from your head when making calls and either use speakerphone or wired headphones (not the bluetooth kind). The experts also advocate using a wired ethernet cable for all internet usage within the home and turning off the Wireless function. If you are still worried that your router is still emitting Wirelessly , you can get these neat little bags that fit over the whole router and are made from EMF shielding material from Amazon and companies like Little Tree group.
